UNDERSTANDING BUTCH: SILENT SOURNESS (CANCER III) SILENT SOURNESS WRITTEN BY ARA FIG MMXXVI In the feral, overgrown Japanese cemetery at the edge of forgotten time, the air hangs thick with the sweet-rot of incense smoke and damp earth. Stone graves lean like broken teeth, their surfaces veined with moss and the slow crawl of roots.  Wild grasses push through cracked concrete, and the plume of incense rises in slow, coiling columns that catch the last bruised light of dusk. The world here is neither day nor night, but the suspended interval between—exactly the territory ankoku-butoh claims as its own. Two figures stand locked in the center of this decay. The older woman’s long black hair hangs in tangled, sweat-damp ropes across her white-painted shoulders and back. The paint is thick, cracked in places where the skin has moved, revealing thin seams of living flesh beneath.
